Bellydance / Middle Eastern Dance
The term "belly dance" is a translation of the French term "danse du ventre", which was applied to the dance in the Victorian era. When the dance was presented at the Chicago World's fair in 1893, it must have been shocking for the prude western audience to see dancers from the Middle East who were using abdominal movements in their dance.
So the name danse du ventre — or dance of the belly — was the name given to this dance. It is something of a misnomer, as every part of the body is involved in the dance; the most featured body part is usually the hips. This is the reason why most dancers today prefer the term middle eastern dance.
The arabic term is Raqs Sharqi (also spelled Raks Sharki ) رقص شرقي which means "Dance of the East". Another common term in Egypt ist Balady or Raks Balady (also spelled Baladi or Beladi), which means "from the countryside". In Turkey Oryantal dans or göbek dansı is used.
Some more translations of the word belly dance are danza del ventre, danza orientale, danza dell'oriente (italian) and danza del vientre (spanish) as well as Bauchtanz and Orientalischer Tanz (german).
